A highly sensitive woman’s new perspective on mental illness

New Online Anxiety Research Project

Posted by: HSP Woman on: September 18, 2008

It’s been a long time, and I have many things to share.

This opportunity just seems too good to not talk about right now.

Some people may remember that a while back I stumbled across a new approach to help with anxiety and panic called ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  From the little I’ve learned about it, I’m thrilled.

I believe it could help all of us with stress, from mild anxiety to housebound agoraphobia.

The big news is that Drs. John Forsyth and Georg Eifert —  the Ph.Ds who wrote the book The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety — are conducting an online research study.

Here’s its description from their web site:

This is an invitation to participate in an exciting new research project that we are launching world wide over the internet. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a new self-help workbook for people who are suffering from anxiety and see their anxiety as a significant problem in their lives. The workbook, The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety, is based on a revolutionary new approach to psychological health and wellness called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT, said as one word).

There are some requirements to be eligible, like you need to 18 or older, have access to the internet, etc.

I signed up.  I don’t even know if I will be chosen to participate, but I really hope so!

I urge all my panic-challenged friends to go check out their web site.

And, you can check out the workbook here.

I am not in any way affiliated with this project; I just hope to participate!

I really need to have some structure when I deal with my anxiety. I have a hard time sitting down and studying by myself. I think it’s best when we can actively discuss what we’re learning.

Anxiety is our challenge, but we are not alone.

I hope you all are feeling better these days.

This is great! I have to say that their workbook has really worked for me. When I first got it I read it so fast that I’m now going back through it and taking my time. I’m also currently tapering off of Klonopin, so it’s not the greatest time to focus on learning new techniques. Acceptance has definitely been helping me though!

It’s pretty funny because a lot of what they talk about is exactly the same concept Claire Weekes talked about back in the 60s! She was a true pioneer.

Welcome, Unfun

Isn’t ACT a great tool to have a life despite having panic/anxiety?

It’s great to know that the workbook has helped you. I’ve been reading another ACT book, so I’ve been putting off starting the workbook.

I am really ready for it now. I need to fully enjoy my life whether or not I continue to have panic attacks or not.

I peeked at your blog. I am really looking forward to reading it more carefully.

Nice to meet you.

Hi HSP woman, welcome back!
I actually bought the textbook for professionals on ACT and anxiety as well as the workbook…I really like the textbook…and it comes with a CD for therapists to print out tons of homework assignments…basically it means I can be my own therapist…

Loving it…and you turned me on to it.

I’ll look into this study too…

Thank you.

Also, hi. It’s good to see you.

Gianna,

Isn’t the textbook a great resource? I have no excuse as to why I haven’t read it all the way through. I love the few pages I’ve read so far. Why haven’t I finished it?

I hope the online research project will help me stay focused. I am really looking forward to it.

I am glad we can offer support to each other. You’ve inspired me, too. Just so you know

PS: What a gorgeous avatar! Love the composition!

Rose,

What a wonderful surprise to hear from you again! How are you?

We survive. How are you?

Thanks for the welcome! My blog only has like four posts on it, but I’m trying to stay motivated to keep posting.

As you already know, withdrawing from the benzos tends to take all of your energy. But I’m hanging in there.

I’ve read your blog for a long time, it’s really nice to see you back! :)

Thank you!

Four posts will eventually turn into 14. It’s wonderful you are sharing your experiences with others. I think it is so important for us to stick together and help each other.

I bought the book when I was going through mindfulness therapy with my psychotherapist and it has been a great tool on my road to recovery. Thanks for posting about this!

Welcome back, Natalie!

What a cool and progressive therapist you have! You are lucky. How is your anxiety these days?

How has the book helped improve your life? Are there specific concepts you discovered that you use frequently?

Thanks for any insight you can share with us!

HSP- thanks for the heads up on this research study…I was selected to be a part of it. I should be receiving the book and accompanying materials shortly. I have know idea what I have gotten myself in to and I willl have to make time to do the work in between all other life’s busy-ness…I am quite curious as I have not looked in to ACT at all…so I wil be trying with blind eyes to speak. Can’t hurt and sure do hope it offers some help….time will tell….it is a 36 week study! Hope all is well and feel free to email me if you have any questions as I don’t get to the blog that often.

Hey there, Silvana!

Me, too. I am in the group. I finished the book, and I am trying to use the metaphors every day.

This book has changed my life forever.

I’ve been going out, panic attacks and all!

How about yourself? Is the book resonating with you?

I hope so. I highly recommend all anxiety sufferers to check it out.

Hello,
Just wondering how you are finding the ACT workbook for Anxiety?
I have tried CBT for my panic attacks, and it is helpful, but wondering if there is a better treatment out there, because i have relapsed into panic and agoraphobia again.
I am looking on the internet and i see other options are mindfulness coginitive therapy, DBT and ACT.
Does anybody know which is most effective for panic attacks?
Thankyou in advance!

Hi.
I completely missed this post!
I recieved my book this morning after my therapist recommended it to me mid Dec. I have just finished the first chapter and i am really looking forward to reading the rest.

HAPPY NEW YEAR :)
